Description: Happiness is the empowerment of life. Growing up with hyperactivity Andy Hair will share his story how exercise has enriched his life fuelling his happiness each day.  Living through risk taking in passion and career and experimenting with endurance sports from an early age he learnt that every experience led to a growth in personal understanding that ‘Anything is possible’.  Developing a strong attachment to positive psychology Andy will share with you how using Dr. Martin Seligman’s PERMA model has led to success in career, family and sport.

Meet Your Presenter! Andy Hair is a highly motivated and entertaining physical education teacher from Australia. As his students' self proclaimed "Physical Literacy Coach," Andy's #1 personal and professional goal is to see all of his children and youth excel and achieve their personal life's dreams. His physical education motto is “Dream, Believe & Achieve!" Outside of his days (and evenings) as a teacher and coach, Andy lives a very physically active life training for fun "mudder" events, community fun runs and Ironman Triathlons.

"I believe a physical education teacher serves as a positive role model for his or her school and community," Andy says. "This extends beyond the walls of our gym and into the various communities that interact with our students." As an example of this, Andy also works for School Sport Victoria as Regional Coordinator. He has been with this group for the past 20 years acting in various roles to provide children with pathways to participate in community sports. Andy currently coordinates 28 sporting carnivals throughout the year.*

* In Australian culture, sports carnivals are held to perform competitions in the individual or team disciplines like track and field, swimming or Surf Life Saving. Teams from different clubs or schools gather together for both individual point-score and team score. Often, the carnival is opened by a parade with the teams marching in uniforms and flags over the field of competition.

(* HANDOUTS AVAILABLE) Michelle Hillier's "Fear to Freedom: Moving YOUR Way!" Keynote
"Fear to Freedom: Moving YOUR Way!" Humans are better when we move: movement awakens, inspires and restores. When people move THEIR way, it can be transformative. Imagine an environment where people are brought together to work, play or create and where they assume that physical movement is a critical component to their individual and mutual success?

Where CONFIDENCE is created, CREATIVITY is nurtured and CONNECTIONS are built. People become accustom to the positivity and “magic” feeling that comes with moving their way and its unique attributes of connecting together on a simple movement that anyBODY can do. Ultimately, it is about taking people of all ages from fear to freedom and the best part is, “you can’t get this wrong!”

Takeaway 1: Importance of actual human CONNECTION to others in a world where social media has taken moved us farther apart in ways. In this session there is no wifi, but the connections are out of this world!
Takeaway 2: Increased self CONFIDENCE and feeling unstoppable after experienced the Groove in the form of movement. Rarely do people move their bodies “their” way and feel safe and successful while doing so - in this experience they will.
Takeaway 3: Ability to use their CREATIVITY in new and meaningful ways. As adults we don’t often nurture this aspect of our humanity and it is so transferable to work, leadership and life.

Jamie Spark's "Skills-Based Health Education: Another Buzz Word or Real Transformation?" in Room 411
Meet Your Presenter! Jamie Sparks, President SHAPE America, began with ETR in January 2019 after 8 years with the Kentucky Department of Education. A member of SHAPE America since 1999, he has served on the SHAPE America Southern District Health Council in 2015 and was elected member-at-large for the Southern District Leadership Council in 2016. Sparks has been a member of The Society of State Leaders for Health and Physical Education and chaired the communication/social media committee. Jamie is also currently executive director of the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
About This Session! The topic of health education is distinctly different from other subjects students study at school. Perhaps the most immediate difference is that health is not just about information you can cover in a textbook. It’s something students are literally living and breathing every day. It’s not enough to simply teach students information about health. As health educators, HealthSmart offers a comprehensive skills-based approach to health education to help students master key concepts and skills that promote health literacy and lifelong health.

(* HANDOUTS Available) Kyle Alexander's "Functional Play & Citizenship: A Model for Living Well" in Dance Room 306
"Functional Play & Citizenship: A Model for Living Well"  Kyle Alexander is the Director of Athletics and Physical Education for New Covenant Schools in Virginia and writes: "Over the last few years we have focused on the concept of "Citizenship" in our physical education classes with goal of developing a sense of being a positive as well as productive citizen within our community.  "Citizenship" is  defined in Webster’s
  • membership in a community
  • the quality of an individual's response to membership in a community
Details: During these last few years we have been sharing the value of good citizenship through the physical education experience with reflection and reinforcement during and after classes. From the small team games to the locker-room, classrooms, larger school community as well as home life to our local community and beyond our students play a role in the progress and enhancement of their community.
  1. Are physical educators training the citizens and future leaders to thrive in a healthy and functional manner to serve and lead their communities?
  2. Believe me as much as any other physical educator I want children to be physically fit with the ability to develop lifelong fitness habits. My strength has always been teaching sport skills and games which was ingrained into we physical education majors 30 years ago and I still love to teach sport skills.
  3. However, I like to say kids haven’t changed, but times have changed. One of the reasons youth sports is growing is that parents are looking for a place their children can learn values.
  4. As physical educators we have the ideal classroom laboratory to teach the values of good citizenship through play.
This year my co-worker Julie and I have implemented what we call “functional play” to allow children to interact in a positive and healthy manner during simple game play. We use the same concepts of “functional fitness” when using the fitness center allowing children play concepts while physically challenging them.

Cassie Brooks & Maria Hallman's "Educating the Community through Skills-Based Health Student Work" in Room 411
"Educating the Community through Skills-Based Health Student Work" is being led by Cassie Brook and Maria Hallman, two award-winning health educators from Indiana.  Cassie teaches at the middle school level and was the 2018 SHAPE America Midwest District Health Teacher of the Year. Maria teaches at the high school level and was the  2016 Indiana Health Teacher of the Year and the INSHAPE Conference Director for the state.
Details: Join us as two experienced secondary health teachers share how their students develop essential health skills while preparing to educate the community through simple displays and larger health fairs.
  • Cassie hosts an annual fitness night where the community can explore various local options for fitness, sport, recreation, wellness, and nutrition. Her middle school health students practice the essential health skill of accessing valid health information, products, and services while preparing poster presentations to share with peers and the community at fitness night.
  • Maria's high school health classes have created a health fair for the local elementary schools. Students advocate for health by becoming content experts and creating interactive displays for elementary students. They access valid health resources and write SMART goals to guide their work. Health at the elementary level is lacking in her district, so these fair exposes students to a greater variety of health topics.
They will share their instructional plans for middle and high school health, student planning documents, options for project display (low or high tech), options for smaller or large-scale community display, strategies for planning a health fair, and assessment rubrics.
  • Discussion may also include how to use these events as a platform for health and physical education advocacy.

** Come Back in 2020: Final Reunion Edition ** July 20-22, 2020
Founder's Note: As announced last year, 2020 will conclude a 9 year run for this beloved event. We actually expected 2018 to be the final year, but folks kept sending us e-mails pleading to continue. Guess they really wanted their 5-Year Pins. In any case, 2020 will be the last and concluding  year with keynoters:
  • Adam Llevo,
  • Jarrod Robinson,
  • Andy Vasily,
  • Joey Feith and
  • Nathan Horne!
The dates set for 2020 are July 20-22, 2020. Again at UNC Asheville.

It's Closing Time... As this event comes to a close, we have mixed feelings. However, we have accomplished the original reasons why the Institute was first envisioned: To bring about a greater awareness of the need to use curriculum alignment (written-taught-tested curriculum) and providing a space for Millennials and #PEGeeks of all sorts to gather. As I look around, I sense that many of you have taken the 'Institute Spirit" back to your respective states and are making it happen. Thanks!
