"Educating the Community through Skills-Based Health Student Work" is being led by Cassie Brook and Maria Hallman, two award-winning health educators from Indiana.  Cassie teaches at the middle school level and was the 2018 SHAPE America Midwest District Health Teacher of the Year. Maria teaches at the high school level and was the  2016 Indiana Health Teacher of the Year and the INSHAPE Conference Director for the state.
Details: Join us as two experienced secondary health teachers share how their students develop essential health skills while preparing to educate the community through simple displays and larger health fairs.
  • Cassie hosts an annual fitness night where the community can explore various local options for fitness, sport, recreation, wellness, and nutrition. Her middle school health students practice the essential health skill of accessing valid health information, products, and services while preparing poster presentations to share with peers and the community at fitness night.
  • Maria's high school health classes have created a health fair for the local elementary schools. Students advocate for health by becoming content experts and creating interactive displays for elementary students. They access valid health resources and write SMART goals to guide their work. Health at the elementary level is lacking in her district, so these fair exposes students to a greater variety of health topics.
They will share their instructional plans for middle and high school health, student planning documents, options for project display (low or high tech), options for smaller or large-scale community display, strategies for planning a health fair, and assessment rubrics.
  • Discussion may also include how to use these events as a platform for health and physical education advocacy.
