"Functional Play & Citizenship: A Model for Living Well"  Kyle Alexander is the Director of Athletics and Physical Education for New Covenant Schools in Virginia and writes: "Over the last few years we have focused on the concept of "Citizenship" in our physical education classes with goal of developing a sense of being a positive as well as productive citizen within our community.  "Citizenship" is  defined in Webster’s
  • membership in a community
  • the quality of an individual's response to membership in a community
Details: During these last few years we have been sharing the value of good citizenship through the physical education experience with reflection and reinforcement during and after classes. From the small team games to the locker-room, classrooms, larger school community as well as home life to our local community and beyond our students play a role in the progress and enhancement of their community.
  1. Are physical educators training the citizens and future leaders to thrive in a healthy and functional manner to serve and lead their communities?
  2. Believe me as much as any other physical educator I want children to be physically fit with the ability to develop lifelong fitness habits. My strength has always been teaching sport skills and games which was ingrained into we physical education majors 30 years ago and I still love to teach sport skills.
  3. However, I like to say kids haven’t changed, but times have changed. One of the reasons youth sports is growing is that parents are looking for a place their children can learn values.
  4. As physical educators we have the ideal classroom laboratory to teach the values of good citizenship through play.
This year my co-worker Julie and I have implemented what we call “functional play” to allow children to interact in a positive and healthy manner during simple game play. We use the same concepts of “functional fitness” when using the fitness center allowing children play concepts while physically challenging them.
